According to the Environmental Work Group's Action Fund, Kentucky ranked 9th nationally in the number of shipments from vermiculite from Libby, MT. According to EWG's review of shipping invoices, about 174,000 tons of asbestos material was shipped from Libby MT to the Zonolite plant in Wilder, KY. ATSDR found that asbestos containing vermiculite was a public health hazard to plant employees and their families. The employees tracked asbestos containing material home from the Zonolite plant.
