U.S. EPA’s breakdown of material dumped in municipal solid waste landfills

According to U.S. EPA, paper accounted for more than 26 percent of weight of material sent to municipal solid waste landfills in 2005.  Food waste was 17 percent.  All plastics (packaging, durable goods, consumer products, etc.) accounted for about 16 percent.  Metals and glass jointly were 13 percent.  Yard waste was 7 percent.  And ‘other waste’ constituted 21 percent of the landfilled waste tonnage.
